This song sounds like a nice walk in the park with a bit of Mungo Jerry in it’s step.
ANOTHER ONE MAC DEMARCO DRUM MAC
Again, I think it’s safe to say we’re seeing a deeper side of Mac here.īaby You’re Out first gives us the hit of a fresh summer breeze. This contrasts with 2012’s Salad Days which opened with a cocky, groove-inciting title track. The title track this time is placed in the same spot as 2015’s Another One, and both tracks share the use of warm synth tones to provide comfort around the singer’s lyrical heartaches. This Old Dog creates a similar mood with a darker acoustic sound, this time complimented with smooth synth swells throughout the chorus. Uh-oh, look’s like I’m seeing more of my old man in me’ There’s a price tag hanging off of having all that fun Look how old and cold and tired and lonely he’s become His vocals here are presented in a a soft narrative tone, taking the listener through the singers thoughts on their subject, in this case reflecting, I think, on how the Canadian singer-songwriter’s success has changed him It begins with a short, repetitive electronic drum beat and gets on the road with an open sounding acoustic guitar ringing through the verse, reminding me of something the La’s may play. We’d already had a glimpse of the new album with February’s release of My Old Man, which I thought hinted at, not-so-much a new direction but, at least, a new flavour in Mac’s style. Blessed, surprisingly, with what can best be described as ‘tap’s aff’ weather’ in Scotland, Mac’s latest release was the perfect soundtrack to my spontaneous weekend holiday.
ANOTHER ONE MAC DEMARCO DRUM FULL
I first listened to this album in full on a trip from my home in Glasgow to the Isle of Bute, just off the west coast. His music will continue to inspire future listeners, and who knows what endeavor Mac Demarco will go on next. One of my favourites, Mac DeMarco, released his third full-length album at the start of the month and after a slightly pessimistic start to my last article, this has been a welcome remedy. His music is refreshingly honest, especially on this album, which thrives off acoustic guitar and melodic phrases. He plays every instrument featured in his songs and has created a unique style for himself.

Mac Demarco is already starting to influence a new generation of musicians.Įven though some perceive Demarco as laid back and possibly lazy, he is extremely dedicated to his music. His style stands out from current artists in pop culture and gives hope for a positive shift in the music industry.

Demarco’s debut mini-LP Rock and Roll Night Club has an almost unrefined sound, whereas This Old Dog shows how far he has matured in a short amount of time. Although his sound has not significantly changed from his first full-length album 2, he seems to be perfecting it. ‘On the Level’ is a synthesized daydream for any indie music lover, and the track ‘Still Beating’ is a love song whose lyrics are amazingly empathetic.įor someone who has never listened to the Canadian songwriter before, This Old Dog is arguably the most well-developed album he has written yet. Questions of love and struggles with both romantic and platonic relationships are common in his songs but describe their issues with a new and interesting way of speech that intrigue one to keep listening. All 13 tracks allow the listener to wander into thoughts of old summer days, invoking a sense of nostalgia that only Mac Demarco’s music can deliver. Demarco’s music reflects his personality, easygoing and thoughtful, and although his music can seem at times comedic and even irreverent, it possesses an underlying concept that makes the listener reflect.įrom the short melody ‘Sister’ to the 7-minute underappreciated ballad “Moonlight on the River,” each song has its own purpose and personality. Less musical effects are used, and the songs flow perfectly from one to the next. This album brings a more calming approach to the table, an indie rock meets grassroots vibe. Unlike previous albums, this one is much more polished, while still having the signature Mac Demarco sound. The four singles off of this LP set the tone for the rest of the album. On May 5, 2017, his third studio album This Old Dog was released. This year brings another batch of new and interesting music, but one of the most stand out artists of this year is Mac Demarco.
