It's odd that both don't have DTS decoding, though, I would've thought that would be standard for quite a while now, but apparently not (maybe it's more standard in the full receiver space and not so much in the HTIB space still). The main problem is that usually audio will be encoded as either DTS or DD (rarely both, though I do have a couple of DVDs that have both), so if you can't decode DTS then you'll be stuck with stereo instead of getting the full surround. Doubtful anyone would really notice much of a difference, though. As has been mentioned from a technical standpoint DTS tends to have the potential to be better than DD, though I've heard that it's also the case that when compressed more, DD will retain its quality a little better. DTS and DD are the similar lossy surround formats, and DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD are the similar lossless formats (which wouldn't matter in this case, but there it is).

I've not yet been successful (typical static sound as would be heard over a standard system). Today, I installed an Apple TV (latest generation), expecting to be able to do the same. They're basically just competing formats. I have, for years, streamed DTS encoded audio files to Airport Expresses that are optically coupled to DTS-capable sound systems. Some TVs may be able to create a pseudo-surround sound. Due to compatibility issues, not all MKV files with DTS encoded audio will playback properly in Windows movies and TV applications.

For obvious reasons, a TV cant play all 6 channels of a 5.1 signal. The DTS:X decoder available via Sound Unbound is the DTS immersive audio decoder, designed to playback any DTS-encoded content, whether stored locally or streamed to a PC or Xbox Console. What benefit does DTS offer above and beyond Dolby Digital? All TVs typically recognize 5.1 audio input (say, Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital+) and either convert it to 2-channel audio out using the TVs speakers or can pass it through via s/pdif or HDMI.
